Granite cliffs. A whitewashed facade carved right into a fjord. It sounds made up, but W Hotels has arrived on the northeast coast of Sardinia with W Sardinia – Poltu Quaty.
Soft opening was last year, technically 2025 in their timeline. Official doors opened recently though. One hundred fifty-seven rooms and suites ready for the summer crush.
Why the timing?
Delta is rolling out its first nonstop flight from the U.S. direct to Sardinia. The large Mediterranean island sits west of the Italian mainland, usually requiring connections. Not anymore.
This W is arguably the flashiest addition to Marriott’s island portfolio yet.
“Sardinia brings a distinct rhythm all it own,” George Fleck, SVP for W Hotels, told everyone. He also noted that Italian influence in design and cuisine is “unmatched,” but that feels like stating the obvious.
The design leans heavy on myth. Local legends say guardians live in the regional caves, so the spaces try to evoke that spirit. It’s all warm tones. Sand, stone, sun-bleached wood. The goal? Immersion.
Suites push it further. They’ve curated works by local artisans like Walter Usai’s ceramic vases and Fabrizio Sanna’s tapestries. Some suites even have private plunge pools. Because nothing says island life like dipping your toes in private saltwater while overlooking the bay.
Can’t be bothered? Head down to the “Wet Deck” pool terrace. There’s live music there. Apertivo service too.
Relaxing in the W Lounge means looking at decor inspired by ancient ruins and island flora. For dinner, go to Tanit. Named for the ancient goddess of abundance. It’s the flagship spot. You eat seafood. You watch the marina.
Active folks? The gym runs twenty-four seven. There is sunrise yoga facing the sea. You can walk the private marina deck or rent a Fjord 41 XL speeds boat. Yes, really.
The catch is access and price.
The property sits about a forty-minute drive from Olbia Costa Smeraelda Airport (OLB). That’s where Delta lands flights from New York JFK starting May 20.
Rooms start at €356. That’s roughly $414 USD.
If you’re a Marriott Bonvoy points hoarder, brace yourself. Redemptions start at 100,00 points a night for the near future. It’s steep. Very steep.
This is the third W in Italy. It follows W Florence and W Rome. But on Sardinia? It shares the Marriott family with the Delta Hotels Olbia and a Sheraton property. This new place? It stands alone.
What does it say about summer travel now? Maybe that accessibility drives luxury. Or maybe it just drives prices up.
