Legend of the Scented Earth
The name “Amberiye” means “amber”. But why would a mosque be named after a fossil resin? The answer can be found in a story that combines piety and imperial drama.
Historically, Ottoman sultans rarely performed the hajj (pilgrimage) in person. In return, they showed their devotion to the Two Holy Mosques (Haremeyn) by providing huge financial aid and building projects. Sultan Abdulhamid II was no exception. He was deeply committed to the sanctity of Medina.
According to local tradition, the sultan asked the pasha (governor) in Medina to bring him a handful of earth near the Prophet’s tomb. What is the reason? He wanted the earth to have the scent of amber, a scent associated with high values and spiritual purity.
Pasha fulfilled his duty. he is ready to go. he boarded the train. The whistle blows. The train starts moving.
As soon as the journey began, Pasha remembered the sultan’s special scent request. He did not actually collect earth near the tomb called Ravza-i Mutahhara, which has remained in the distance. Instead, in a moment of panic, he grabbed a handful of dirt from the ground near the station.
He said he was close enough. ‘My dear soil, the Sultan is far away. How can I tell the difference?’ He thought thus.
After returning to Istanbul, he presented the soil to the Sultan. Mr. Abdulhamid was took the earth. He brought it to his nose. he took a deep breath.
Then he spoke.
“Pasha brought me amber, but it lacked the scent of musk.”
Pasha was humiliated. He was speechless. He realized his deception were revealed by the subtle differences in the scents. Confused, he asked what the new mosque he was financing should be called.
The Sultan smiled. He said the name of the mosque should be Amberiye.
“Why?” Pasha asked.
*”So that people will learn.”
