Barcelona Dramatically Increases Tourist Tax: What Travelers Need to Know

Barcelona is set to significantly raise its tourist tax, doubling fees for accommodations starting April 1st. This move comes amid growing local frustration with overtourism, which many residents argue drives up the cost of living and strains resources. The change will affect both hotel guests and short-term rental users, making trips to the Catalan capital more expensive.

New Fees and How They Break Down

Under the new rules, hotels will charge between €10 and €15 per person per night, depending on the hotel’s star rating. Previously, fees ranged from €5 to €7.50. For example, a couple staying in a luxury hotel for three nights could see an additional €90 added to their bill.

Short-term rentals, like those listed on Airbnb, will face an even steeper increase, with fees rising to €12.50 per night per person, doubling from the current €6.25.

Why the Change? Addressing Overtourism and Housing Crisis

The Catalan parliament approved these measures to combat the region’s high tourism volume and alleviate pressure on the housing market. One-quarter of the collected tax revenue will be directly allocated to addressing Barcelona’s housing crisis. The city first introduced a tourist tax in 2012, but this is by far the most substantial increase to date.

This escalation reflects a broader trend: many popular tourist destinations worldwide are increasing taxes to manage overtourism and its economic impact. Barcelona has been a focal point of this debate, with locals staging protests as early as 2025 and even resorting to direct action against tourists in crowded areas.

What This Means for Travelers

Travelers planning trips to Barcelona should factor these increased costs into their budgets. While award bookings using points may offer some savings, many still incur local taxes and fees.

“Starting in April, Barcelona will implement one of the highest tourist taxes in Europe, with nightly, per-person fees doubling from current levels.”

The city is making it clear that tourism comes at a financial cost, and visitors will now bear a larger share of the economic burden.

The increase in tax will affect both budget and luxury travelers, but may disproportionately impact those who rely on short-term rentals, such as Airbnb.
